A trader earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president just before it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from non-public details of the US operation.

Market Movement in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the end of January surged in the hours before Donald Trump stated on the weekend that the president had been apprehended.

One account, which registered on the site recently and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $nearly half a million from a starting bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that users estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the midday period of the prior Friday.

However these probabilities had jumped to over 10% by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the early hours of Saturday, pointing to a rapid movement in market sentiment just before the social media post was made.

"This specific wager has all the hallmarks of a bet based on inside information," commented a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other traders also earned significant sums from similar wagers.

Legal Questions Emerges

Some lawmakers are growing concerned.

A bill introduced on Monday aims to prohibit government employees from making trades on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in recent years, with traders able to wager on everything from elections to politics.

This sector faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. However it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Insider trading is illegal in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the forecasting space.

A company executive for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
