The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The former head of state was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.

This involved seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the arrest, Justice Moraes said data from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his child.

His child, Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a gathering of his backers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on social media on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I call on you to battle with us."

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that he be permitted to leave his home for healthcare, saying he needed frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plot which involved plans to kill his opponent and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
