In the course of multiple weeks, the American president started showing everyone his designs for a gilded ballroom double the dimensions compared to the White House and then commenced independently demolishing the eastern section to construct it.
He has committed acts countless times more severe – the present calculation of fatalities from his cuts to international aid stands at 600,000 and rising, and this week a study predicted his petroleum strategies would kill 1.3 million more. However nothing as distinctive. No former leader would have dared – really, no other president would have contemplated – independently wrecking large sections of the White House in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the active collaboration of some of the richest Americans, nearly all of which have business with the government.
We transitioned from 'the gentle will obtain the world' to 'the gentle will succumb to cholera'
As disorienting as it is to witness the president seek to颠覆 the old idea about democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there is one large group of Americans who should not find it entirely new. That is those of us – within elder demographics close to half – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have watched across decades as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we grew up with into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of affection into an icon of hate who blesses specifically the brutality that he condemned in biblical teachings; this change developed more slowly, across decades as opposed to months, yet it remains unsettling through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold
Hence I shall explain the Jesus from my upbringing, since in theory Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and since the rapidly expanding group within America may possess limited understanding of him since they are atheists or agnostics or nones. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with different religions; but I do think that there are pearls of substantial value in biblical accounts.
It is emphatically not the narrative of an authoritative monarch emerging; instead, an infant arrives to displaced parents in an automotive shelter, who must quickly flee to a different country to escape undercover officers. The infant develops in modest conditions, a laboring woodworker; his message is about love for others, especially for the disadvantaged – not simply tender feelings, but tangible care, shown by providing food and housing. Christ's response to aggression is to offer the other cheek – not as a demonstration of passive acceptance, but as a means to instruct the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing is that if someone steals your coat you should give them your pullover also.
The obvious and direct reality that the Savior from scripture advocates for a kind of extreme compassion focused on the poor is what has always made Christian religion rather a scandalous religion: appealing to the populace, but owing to its intrinsic extremism demanding to be restrained. During the 1950s it was restrained via weakening – Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it essentially blessed current circumstances.
A Struggle for the Best of Us
Therefore I have felt heartened to see the persistent defiance against Trump develop during the previous year. It has provided significant comfort to assist in constructing the campaign that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and likely has encouraged voters to participate in large quantities in the off-year elections. We will need to persist with it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags at every demonstration and appeals to the finest aspects of American history.
