Retatrutide is an experimental injectable created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three gut hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Preliminary studies suggest it could assist patients reduce up to a quarter of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed online as the next Ozempic.

Medical Professionals Express Worries

However, doctors and chemists have warned that the sale of what remains an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could lead to individuals administering substances of unknown origin.

Several professionals stated the demand for the experimental drug could be linked to the rising cost of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.

Within minutes of entering one community, a seller shared contact information, where the majority of purchases take place. The vendor provided an instruction manual and promised shipping within 48 hours. When asked whether the substance was genuine, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. None inquired about body mass, medical conditions or previous experience.

Within these groups, posts show black plastic packages with Royal Mail labels, stating to contain fresh supplies. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can select between dry substance containers, mixed at residence with sterile water, or ready-to-use injectors usually sold at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When questioned how long a pen should be used, vendors give conflicting responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

A spokesperson for the messaging service stated it actively moderated harmful content on its service including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

“People are administering substances they can’t verify. Although the research behind retatrutide is valid, these online versions may not contain what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmacy at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service connected the surge in interest to recent cost increases for authorized slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, individuals are turning to social media. But fake injections are extremely dangerous. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the environment they were made in was sterile,” she said.
